Witten, who is Tony Romo’s most trusted passing target, suffered a lacerated spleen during the preseason. He would provide a major boost to the Cowboys offense if he is medically cleared to play in tonight’s season opener, both as a receiver and pass protector for Romo. He is the most experienced TE on the Cowboys’ roster by far.

If he is not cleared to play tonight, he is still expected to play in the Cowboys Sept 16th game in Seattle.

Witten offered to sign a medical waiver clearing doctors of any responsibility if he plays. The Cowboys did not agree to it.

If Witten sits out tonight this would be the first game that he would miss since his rookie season.
